It’s time to get to know your bait!

Captain Kathy Brown of Miss Judy Charters is giving us a big smile! Why? This is one of those selfies that was done right! This fisherman caught two nice black sea bass. What kind of bait? As you can see, on one hook is a small piece of half eaten squid on the other is a squid’s head. The old squid head bait can be used over and over! Why? Because it’s not the smell that gets the fish’s attention! It is those tentacles just a waving in the current that gets them every time!

      Sound Fishing

      whiting sound fishing
Captain Kathy is showing off our first whiting for 2023 fish year! The whiting are biting! It’s time to go plain old sound fishing!

Once again, if you want to catch a fish and it doesn’t matter what it is, I suggest doing some plain old sound fishing. During this time of the year we do a lot of whiting fishing in the sound because in most cases it has been too rough to go offshore. When fishing in the sound, I suggest taking dead wild caught shrimp as bait. The farm raised ones don’t work too well! We caught whiting, summer trout, bluefish, blowfish, spots, croakers, stingrays, and sharks all of assorted sizes. The secret to unlocking this bite is to fish two hours before till 2 hours after the tide change. The reason being less current means more bites! It’s time to get to know your bait!

Captain Kathy Brown of Miss Judy Charters is holding a nice pig fish! And the fisher asked, “What is that noise that it is making? Well, the answer is simple… this fish got its name for grunting like a pig not for looking like one! Now you know the rest of the story!

      gag grouper
This is a Cheetah Fish! This fish used to be called a Gag Grouper! However, the lady that caught it called it by a different name. She called it the Cheetah Fish! So let’s set the record right: The gag is also known as grouper, copper belly, charcoal belly, and Cheetah Fish! Believe you me, if you think about it all names are simply correct!

      Artificial Reefs

If you want to go straight to a serious black fish bite I suggest making the CCA, L, or J Buoy artificial reefs one of your destinations. All artificial reefs and hard bottom areas located in more than 50 feet of water are holding the attentions of black sea bass! The best bait for this fish is cut squid or fish. Put your bait on the bottom, catch a fish, put the fish in the cooler, and repeat!

      sheepshead offshore
Here’s what nice winter time cold water offshore Sheepshead should look like!

The Sheepshead still rule the structure at the artificial reefs that are located in 45 feet or less. With temperature staying on the cool side most of this up coming week this bite should prevail! You know the deal the best bait is “purple back fiddlers!”

      Savannah Snapper Banks

For those that want to give Savannah Snapper banks bottom fishing a try now is the time. You really never know what you might catch while plain old bottom fishing at the banks. You could find yourself catching triggerfish, black seabass, vermilion snapper, amberjack, flounder, as well as other biters.

      Practicing Catching is Fun!

A nice juvenile genuine red snapper and three happy fishers! On this fish day this group caught, fought and released over 20 assorted size black seabass, two pig fish, one grouper, and two bank bass! How long did that catching take? Two hours! Are these fish still swimming? We were fishing in 45 feet of water so the chances are more than less! There is a good chance that most fish are not affected by the ride on the hook to the surface especially when bottom fishing at this depth.

      Gulf Stream Report

      wahoo
Ryan Martin and Patrick Corse (Savannah GA) are holding up a nice Wahoo, which was caught while trolling in 75 degree water!

It is officially WAHOO BITING TIME! Ryan Martin and Patrick Corse are holding up a nice Yahoo Wahoo that was caught while trolling in about 155 to 175 feet of water. After the team found 75 degree water they caught 2 Mahi Mahi, black-fin tuna, and missed a sail! When the trolling bite slowed they started bottom fishing in 155 feet and caught some very nice vermilion snapper as well as other biters! So, therefore now you know you must go!
