The theme of this report is the tide is a ROLLINGG…..

With this South Southwest, South Southeast, South wind continuing and our big summer moons, the story of this latter half of the summer has been moving tide and thermoclines. Remembering this report is coming from St. Marys Inlet while fishing out of Fernandina, I cant say much for anything past the 30.38 line going south.. Although satellite charts show the stream pushing in to Elton Bottom..

First of all, spend your time in the morning catching white bait on your local wrecks, buoys etc.. It will pay off for a better grade of fish. The stringer fish bite has been slow due to the thermocline up north. Personally, I have stopped wasting my time trying to fish inside the break as it has been unproductive for me the last few weeks. I have been drift fishing the break and deeper (hint, hint) in the rolling tide that has been cooking about 3 knots on average out there. This tide will make it difficult for your average angler (client) to feel the bite, so make sure you bring plenty of lead. That being said, if you can get your white bait down there for long enough, hold on, because the scamp grouper and muttons are chewing. There has been the occasional grey bite, so try not to be too under gunned and be ready for the right bite. Drifting can actually be your friend in this scenario, as the boat tends to help the less experienced angler pull these larger fish away from their structure.

Deeper out, the daytime sword bite has been great around the moons if you can find a weather window that fits your schedule. If you’re going to spend the money on the gear and the fuel, be prepared to give it a full day out there. It only takes one good bite and one good fish to make it all worth it. Multiple fish have been caught between 2,000 and 1,400 foot. Make sure your tip rod is straight up and down and don’t take your eyes off it. Send your jug rod way out the back and let it do its thing. My buddies, Captain Roger Beale Jr, Mike Shipe, Chris Lau, Austin Bacon, Mac Schneider, and Kini Bowers, had a nice triple marker last week aboard Beale Marine. The fish was caught due east of Mayport inlet in 1700ft. They started the day with catching the junior angler Finn’s first sword. They continued to go 3/5 keeping two and releasing one. The big one ate a cuda belly and gave the boys a nice hour and a half fight till Mike hit her with the harpoon about 15ft down. The fish weighed in at 304lbs gutted(see picture). Congrats on the day boys! Can’t wait to get back out there myself.

The overall theme of our fishery lately has been to go for gold or play around inside trying to grind out a limit of bees in the thermocline. I think you can tell what I’m going to choose!

Good luck out there, and stay safe

Nice fish! My “going for gold” right now is pretty much just catching ANYTHING, lol.
