September 16, 2022 at 8:29 pmSeptember fishing in St Augustine is dictated by two things: (1) the mullet, and (2) the water temperature. The fall mullet run will be in full swing by the end of the month. The beaches and inlets will be stacked with them. And with the mullet come the tarpon, snook, redfish, flounder, and trout. September is an exciting month to fish the area. The obvious bait of choice right now is mullet, so having a cast net will be an easy way to get them. Although, later into the run, having live shrimp will be deadly. The fish will pound it as it is something different. As the mullet are showing up, the water temperatures are slowly dropping. The cooler the water gets, the better the bite will be.
If fishing along the beaches, trolling, drifting, or casting mullet, mullet imitations, and big silver spoons are good ways to bend the rod. Gear up though, there will be 100 pound plus tarpon cruising the mullet schools as well as plenty of sharks and maybe a few kingfish.
Our area inlets and bridges will be on fire for the next few weeks. A chunk of mullet, ladyfish, or blue crab will net you as many big redfish as you feel like reeling in. Live mullet and live blue crab are also great choices. Either free lining or Carolina rigged on the bottom is the best way.
Inshore, the snapper bite will remain good through the end of the month. A Carolina rigged small circle hook and live shrimp is the best way to get them. Weight size used is determined by depth and current. Use as little weight as possible to get the job done. Black drum, flounder, and redfish will also be frequent visitors to your cooler while using shrimp.
September is a great month to fish Saint Augustine, so get on out on the water. Good luck and tight lines. I’ll see ya out there.
