April 28, 2022 at 11:53 pmThe weather is getting warmer and hopefully the winds will begin to give us a little reprieve. April fishing was good when the winds would settle and the fish God’s allowed.
Look for our conditions to settle into our typical Bermuda High patterns which give us Sw/Se winds and fairly calm ocean conditions.
The inshore fishing for reds, trout, sheepshead, flounder, black drum, jack cravelle, and a few more other species will be good. The big rocks are holding decent numbers of reds, trout, and sheepshead with spanish/ jacks in the mix.
Live shrimp tipped on jigs, float rigs, and carolina rigs work well. A few big black drum and bull reds are stills hanging on the rocks so a good chunk of blue crab can be effective fished deep. Remember too that this is a transition period so be prepared for battle!
Big fish are migrating with the warm H20 and ample bait pods pushing north. It’s not unusual to stick a tarpon, shark, or 40 lb plus Jack snooping around.
The ICW both north and south are holding fish but, as the water temperatures rise in shallow water many species will begin to spend more time in deeper water where it’s cooler hunting food.
The offshoot scene was hopping a few days ago and it’s about to break loose. On a recent trip we scored big on both snapper and gag grouper fishing small pogies/ menhaden we scooped off the beach. The local party grounds will hold fish both on bottom and on the top so don’t hesitate to troll a few baits on top for kings, cudas, sharks, cobia, sails and little tunny to name a few. Light 7 strand wire, small hooks and a top shot of 20-30 lb fluorocarbon leader can be effective.
Remember you can’t catch them from the couch!
