April 23, 2022 at 11:37 pmMay is a good time to plan your species and there are many different ones around to catch such as Spanish mackerel, jack crevalle, trout, bluefish, redfish, ladyfish and over the years we have even been successful on some tarpon. Often, afternoons are filled with strong winds or heavy sea breezes. I like to get out early when the day is calm.
I make a decision based on the tide what would be best to target. If the tide is low, I will target redfish. Morning is still a good time to catch a backing red. Most schools are broken up on the flats and single & doubles or very small groups can still be had. At this time, mullet, shrimp, mud minnows or crab can all be great baits. However, if the tide is incoming or high, it could be a good time to use popping corks, top-waters and diving lures over bottom structure such as rocks, grass lines and oyster mounds. At this time of year, with many different species around to stretch a line.
Another great tip, “Any point, no matter what it is, that gets divided by moving water, is a potential good spot.” Throw your bait, lure, corks, up current, and bring it through the rips, & eddies. Take accurate notes, tide, time of year, place, lure, etc. As years go by, this will separate fair anglers from great anglers.
Also, there are no magic lures. Pick a couple of baits and cover the water column. Learn to master a few lures and know what that lure is doing at all times while staying in tune with it so you’re ready for the bite! Talking lures, we are still in the window for a gator trout. Again, remember the key to everything I just talked about is fishing points, high clean cooler water and over structure. The river and intercoastal waterway should do well this month. Many fish will follow bait moving south in the river.
Until next month, tight lines.
