May 7, 2022 at 6:30 pmPrelude: I’ve lived on the water in Jax riverside for a bit over a year. As a fishing fan, I was super stoked about the possibilities of wetting a line whenever it suited me. Unfortunately, I quickly realized, the fishing ain’t all that in my location. After a long bout of discouragement, I decided to quit being a little bitch and try and crack the catching code. Will I ever figure it out? Probably not, but follow along with my fishing log to find out!
5/7 Saturday, lines out at 2:30pm, about one hour before high tide. It’s a beautiful day at about 85 degrees, but it’s not too hot thanks to a strong west wind (~19mph). The west wind is welcome on this side of the river as it doesn’t materialize in choppy waters.
I’ve got two lines out, consisting of:
- Rig 1: Double drop rig with a 3 oz pyramid sinker. Shrimp flavored fishbite on bottom, gulp shrimp up top. 30 lb mono.
- Rig 2: Gulp shrimp on a 1oz egg sinker. 10 lb braid.
Not much for fishing action today, unfortunately. One of my Gulf Shrimp got its head chewed off. I missed the strike, probably due to the heavy wind (or a ninja blue crab). I thought the bite would be better these past few days following the new moon, but not so much. Finally hung it up at about 6:30pm.
Tomorrow is Mothers Day and I’ll be grilling and spending time with family outside. You can bet I’ll be dropping some lines in the water.
EDIT: So, I was typing this report up in the hammock just about to call it a day, and sure enough, I saw my line go slack out of the corner of my eye. Got a nice St. Johns River cat to save the day, AT THE BUZZER. He bit on the Gulp Shrimp on the bottom drop hook.
