July 28, 2022 at 7:49 pmIts been a pretty explosive couple of weeks on the Tarpon. I’m averaging 2 landed fish per trip. I’m jumping off one here there but, for the most part, the landing percentage stays around 65%. I’ve covered Tarpon pretty extensively before so if you’re looking for details, read my previous posts.
The river fishing has gotten quite a bit better compared to last month. The river Red Fish bite was abysmal for a while there. I’m still not seeing as many Reds around Mayport as I would like but, areas from Ft. Caroline on westward toward Trout River are holding really nice fish.
I’m covering a lot of ground to find them but generally when I do, the numbers are good in those areas. If you hit a spot and find it dead, don’t give up the entire bank. Make yourself work the entire area. Reds are often times all huddled together on a small part of a bank of rocks. Once you cross paths with a proper school that’s feeding, you’ll usually catch several in one spot.
We’re also starting to see some quality Trout around as well. Same deal, fishing west of Ft Caroline. Generally in depth ranges from 3 to 12 feet of water. Rocky structures are key.
Incoming tide has been best but, so long as there is moving water, you can usually find action when it’s incoming or out going. I’m using a combination of either live finger Mullet or live Pogies on a Sheepshead jig. Yes, Pogies on a jig in the river is a deadly option. Especially for those big Trout. I’ve never known a gator Trout to turn down a large Pogy. Reds, too.
I have a seminar coming up on Red Fishing. If you are looking to tighten up on your Red Fish skills, you’ll want to attend this. Its being held at the West Marine at the St. Johns Town Center off of JTB. The seminar will be held on August 9th at 7:30pm and will end around 8:30pm. The event is sponsored by the CCA.
Capt. Steve was born on US Naval Air Station, Port Lyautey near Kenitra, Morocco. As a very young child his family relocated to Naval Station Mayport near Jacksonville, FL and he still calls Jacksonville home today. Call to book a trip, or visit Madness Charters on the web.
