August 18, 2022 at 11:35 pmWent to Amelia Island State Park with a buddy yesterday afternoon to do some surf fishing. I had heard some positive reports as far as surf conditions go, and my expectations were not only met, but widely exceeded. No kidding, I don’t think I’ve EVER seen water this clean at any north Florida beach, ever. Aqua blue water with uncanny visibility. My buddy is from Tampa, and as we were driving over Nassau Sound, he said, “If I didn’t know any better, I’d swear we were on the Gulf.” Coming from a true gulf coast snob, that really means something.
We got setup just before 2pm, just as the high tide began to recede. Bait was everywhere, the surf was calm, and the beach was empty besides us. It was looking like we were primed for a killer day of surf fishing. Unfortunately, the fish were completely absent from the equation.
We had four lines out. Three surf rods with pompano rigs, and 1oz sputniks were enough to hold bottom. We were using a combo of live and fresh peeled shrimp tipped with sandflea flavored Fishbites. The fourth rod was rigged for a bigg’n with a hearty chunk of cut mullet.
After an hour of inaction, it was time to try something else. I walked down the beach a good bit while throwing a gold spoon. After thirty minutes of that, not one hit. So, after about 2.5 hours, without a single bite on any line or lure, and a nasty thunderstorm heading our way, we packed it in for the day.
Even though the fish were nowhere to be found, it was an unbelievably beautiful and enjoyable afternoon on the beach at Amelia Island. Hopefully next time the fish will show up.

2 years, 3 months ago🤣 Bro, story of my life. If all the stars align for perfect, fishy conditions, it’s a virtual lock that the fishing is going to underwhelm. Oh well, that’s why they call it “fishing” and not “catching!”
