May 1, 2023 at 12:12 amIt’s a forgone conclusion that May is the turning point for the weather change that kicks off the summer season. April was a difficult month with bookoo wind that made it a challenge. Lots of tough days with our transition to our typical summer days.
Pogies showed up in mass and gave us the opportunity to catch a myriad of different species. Jacks, spanish, ladyfish, trout, redfish and sheepshead bit fairly well on the change of water temperature coupled with the increase in bait around. I would look for this to continue to improve and get noticeably better. Look for fish in the pogey pods during the next few weeks during the day . Grab a net full and pitch them into the pods for some fast and furious action. Big marauding jacks, sharks, bull reds , and even tarpon to be feeding in the bait.
Take the same baits back to the river or rocks for reds , trout, jacks , and tarpon carefully pitching the rocks with knocker rigs or 3/8 oz jigs. These baits can also be effective up the river for jumbo trout, reds, and sharks.
The offshore scene should be hot and heavy for kings, cudas, sharks, cobia, little tunny, and sailfish. The aforementioned can be caught trolling the pogies or drop a few to the bottom for snapper, grouper, jacks, triggers, and blackfish.
The fishing should be good in May so grab a few friends and go fishing.
